In Pelham, where the Niagara Escarpment creates a unique microclimate with hot summers and cold winters, homeowners are often searching for trees that can thrive in these conditions. The Green Giant Cedar (Thuja occidentalis ‘Green Giant’) is a popular choice for its ability to tolerate full sun, dry soil, and extreme temperatures, making it an excellent option for the Pelham area.

When selecting Green Giant Cedars, consider the mature size of the tree, which can reach up to 60 feet tall and 10-15 feet wide. Plant multiple trees, spaced 8-10 feet apart, to create a lush, dense hedge that provides maximum privacy screening. For a more dramatic effect, plant a single tree as a specimen, leaving space to appreciate its full height and width.

In the Niagara region, the best time to plant trees is in the spring or fall, when the weather is cooler and rainfall is more consistent. Plant your Green Giant Cedar in a location with full sun to partial shade, and well-draining soil. Dig a hole two to three times the width and depth of the tree’s root ball, and plant at the same depth as it was in the nursery. Water thoroughly and mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Green Giant Cedars offer several benefits for homeowners in the Pelham area. Their dense foliage provides excellent windbreaks and noise reduction, making them ideal for homes along busy roads or in areas prone to strong winds. They also tolerate dry soil conditions, making them a great choice for areas with low rainfall or where irrigation is limited.

Green Giant Cedars are relatively low-maintenance trees, but they do require some care to thrive. Regular watering, especially during the first year after planting, is essential. Fertilize annually with a balanced fertilizer, and prune as needed to maintain shape and promote healthy growth. With proper care, your Green Giant Cedar will provide years of beauty and function to your landscape.
