Smithville residents know that a well-placed tree can bring beauty, shade, and property value to their homes. When it comes to choosing the right tree for their yard, Eastern White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis) is an excellent option. Native to the Niagara region, this hardy evergreen tree thrives in the local climate and can provide a stunning natural screen for yards and properties.

Eastern White Cedar trees are known for their distinctive, pyramidal shape and soft, feathery foliage. They can grow up to 50 feet tall, but can be pruned to maintain a smaller size. These trees are also highly resistant to disease and pests, making them a low-maintenance choice for homeowners. In the Niagara region, Eastern White Cedar trees typically grow best in well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade.

When planting an Eastern White Cedar tree, it’s essential to choose a location with good air circulation to prevent disease. Dig a hole that is twice as wide and as deep as the tree’s root ball, and add a 2-inch layer of mulch around the base of the tree to retain moisture. Water the tree regularly during its first year of growth, but avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. Aftercare is minimal, but regular pruning can help maintain the tree’s shape and promote healthy growth.

One of the most popular uses for Eastern White Cedar trees is as a natural screen or hedge. Their dense foliage and ability to grow up to 3 feet per year make them an excellent choice for blocking out neighboring properties or creating a sense of seclusion. To plant a hedge or screen, space the trees 3-5 feet apart, depending on their mature size. Regular pruning will help maintain the desired shape and promote even growth.
